Lowering the coffin into the grave
Prayer when lowering the body into the grave:
"In the name of Allãh, with the help of Allãh, and on the religion of the Messenger s."
(Jãmi’ alTirmidhĩ, 1046)
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَبِاللَّهِ وَعَلَى مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ
Filling the grave
Those who wish can scatter three handfuls of earth into the grave.
First Handful: "From it (the earth) We created you,"
مِنۡهَا خَلَقۡنٰكُمۡ
Second Handful: "and into it We will return you"
وَفِيهَا نُعِيدُكُمْ
Third Handful: "and from it We will extract you another time"
وَمِنْهَا نُخْرِجُكُمْ تَارَةً أُخْرَى
Completing the burial
Once the grave has been filled supplications are made for the deceased, these can include:
- Comfort / steadfastness for the deceased in the grave.
- Patience for the family members left behind.
- That the deceased in granted entry into Paradise without difficulty and protected from Hellfire
The above supplications can also be offered for other occupants of the burial area before leaving or when visiting.
